Many online businesses have a hungry need for images. Nothing livens up the feel of a blog like a colorful photo. Our words may do the heavy lifting when it comes to explaining what we have to offer, but every advocate could use some nice clothes.

Even if you’re not a great photographer, you can lessen your need for stock photo sites if you look for opportunities to take some pictures that are relevant to your business. If you have a special event coming up, that’s an obvious opportunity. Would your customers enjoy seeing a photo tour behind the scenes of your business? What about some fun candid shots of the staff they may interact with online but are unlikely to meet? And when was the last time your product had a photo shoot?

Stock images get stale, and the more media-savvy among us can spot them quickly. Your clients and customers will likely appreciate seeing something more unique and real.

The “fun” part is important here. Assuming you don’t have professional photography skills, the imperfections of your images are more forgivable if there’s a lot of life in them. Use this as a chance to show a more human, social side to your business – especially if it more often appears serious and buttoned up.

Today’s Action Step: Break out your digital camera or phone and get silly for a few minutes. Use these photos to add a lighter touch to your blog or social media postings.
